Es el proceso de envejecimiento de las estructuras del oído interno; lo que afecta la audición, especialmente la discriminación ( alteracion de la capacidad para comprender las palabras)
La evolución es lentamente progresiva, y se presentan en tres estadios:
Inicial : es cuando baja la audición en las frecuencias agudas y es casi inadvertido en la percepción.
Incidencia social: cuando la pérdida auditiva es de más de 30 dB a partir de la frecuencia 2000.
Aislamiento: cuando las dificultades para comunicarse son importantes y hace que el paciente se aísle en su mundo interior.
Es importante la ayuda familiar que impida el aislamiento del paciente.
El uso de audífonos es en estos casos de mucha ayuda.
